What do I need to do?
How do I do it?
When should I do it?
How long is the rehabilitation for my tennis elbow going to take?
The answer to the last question is – As long as it takes!!

The first thing to remember is that Tennis Elbow becomes a chronic problem if it isn’t looked after properly.

In terms of tennis elbow rehabilitation, there is one absolute rule. You must do nothing until you are experiencing little or no pain, and then the rehabilitation process, and exercises can only proceed providing you have no pain in whatever exercise you are doing.

Before you can start playing tennis properly again you must have restored full strength and mobility to your elbow.

There are three different phases to your tennis elbow rehabilitation, and they can be summarized as follows.

The first phase is to reduce inflammation and pain. You need to do two things here, and the first is to begin the healing process whilst also preventing the associated muscles from wasting.

The process here has four distinct parts.

Rest which means avoiding overusing the injury. You must continue to use the muscles to ensure they don’t waste, and a good blood supply is maintained. The activity must not be painful, if it hurts don’t do it!!

Use Ice all the time until you return to full use, as it lessens inflammation.

Use compression and elevation as it helps the blood supply and also reduces swelling.

In the second phase of tennis elbow rehabilitation, exercise comes into play. It is important to increase your elbow strength, and endurance. You need to get the elbow to function again properly.

This flexibility is achieved primarily by extending the elbow gently without flexing it, and holding the extended position for up to 30 seconds, but NOT to the point of pain, and doing this perhaps twenty times a day.

To strengthen the elbow, sit with your elbow on your knee, and with a weight not exceeding 1 lb. In your hand, and palm downwards flex your wrist up and down slowly. Note that the elbow shouldn’t move at all. Do exactly the same thing with your palm facing upwards.

Another useful exercise is to use a tennis ball, and squeeze it in your hand, and keep doing this.
Remember that there should be no pain.

You should gradually increase the weight as your strength grows, and always use an ice pack afterwards.

The third phase is where you gradually return to playing whilst maintaining and increasing the second phase.

In terms of playing you shouldn’t start until your symptoms are gone, but what you can do in combination with flexibility exercises is to just hit gentle forehands in succession and repeat this with backhands and lobs. If you start with fifteen minute sessions, and increase it to an hour, and you get no pain, then you can start to serve, and then return to competitive tennis.

Remember that in Tennis Elbow Rehabilitation there is no gain with pain!!

In fact, people who suffer from this problem have hardly played the game. In this condition the outer part of the elbow becomes painful and tender. The pain causes the movements of the elbow to be constrained. Simple actions such as lifting, gripping and carrying become difficult.

One of the strongest reasons for this condition is the overuse of muscles i.e. the muscles which pull the hand backwards (the wrist extensors). Over straining causes an inflammation that may be swollen, painful and tender. Injury to the arm can be another reason for inflammation. Tennis elbow is mainly caused when some activities like gripping, twisting, reaching and moving are done in an improper manner or an awkward position, repetitive stress, excess force and no time for recovery provided for the wear and tear.

Some of the movements which can be restricted or can avoid repetitiveness are continuous rotation of the forearm and bending of the wrist, gripping in a stressful position by combining inward and outward movement of the forearm, throwing motions and gestures that strike objects with hand.

Common symptoms to be aware when affected by tennis elbow

Your forearm suffers recurring pain on the outside of the upper forearm.
The pain is branched out from the arm towards the wrist.
Pain while lifting or bending the arm.
Pain while grasping small and light objects could be sign of concern.
Trouble or discomfort while extending the arm.
Pain which lasts for 6 to 12 weeks or even more.

Common tips to remember

-Resting is one of the best solutions to treat this problem
-You can use braces which are available in various sports shop. It is very helpful in relieving pain from tennis elbow problem.
-Try to lift objects with your palm facing your body.
– Being aware of the problem and treating it immediately
-Use machines instead of your hands to avoid any repetition
-Allow job rotations for everyone to get used to different muscles
-Use ergonomically designed tools that prevent strain on your hands.

Home remedies for Tennis Elbow

For the inflamed elbow you can use ice compress which helps in decreasing the pain. Ice helps in slowing down the local metabolism, thus helps in relieving pain and muscle spasm.

Use massage therapy.

Do your regular stretching exercises to prevent any kind of friction to your forearms. The stretching helps in strengthening the forearms.

Some exercises you can do to help strengthen your muscles. With the palm facing the ceiling, place your forearm on a desk with the wrist tucked over the edge. Grip any heavy object like a hammer or a two-pound juice can. Lift your hand up and down by moving your wrist, repeat this 20 times. Do this with the both the arms.

Warm and baked potato applied to the elbow can help relief the pain of tennis elbow.

Acupuncture can be used for treating tennis elbow problem. As it stimulates nervous system and also releases pain-relieving endorphins.

"Tennis elbow" is a common term for a condition caused by overuse of arm and forearm muscles that results in elbow pain. You don’t have to ply tennis to get this, but the term came into use because it can be a significant problem for some tennis players.

Tennis elbow is caused by either abrupt or subtle injury of the muscle and tendon area around the outside of the elbow. Tennis elbow specifically involves the area where the muscles and tendons of the forearm attach to the outside bony area (called the epicondyle) of the elbow. Your doctor may call this condition lateral epicondylitis. Another common term, "golfer’s elbow," refers to the same process occurring on the inside of the elbowwhat your doctor may call medial epicondylitis. Overuse injury can also affect the back or posterior part of the elbow as well.

The pain caused by tennis elbow normally lasts for 6 to 12 weeks. Some people have pain for as little as 3 weeks, while others may experience discomfort in the elbow joint for several years.

Symptoms
Tennis elbow symptoms usually begin gradually. The main symptom is pain, which may begin with a dull aching or soreness on the outer part of the elbow that goes away within 24 hours after an activity. As time goes on, it may take longer for the pain to go away. The condition may further progress to pain with any movement, even during everyday activities, such as lifting a jug of milk. Pain may spread to the hand, other parts of the arm, shoulder, or neck (referred pain).

Tennis elbow Causes

Tennis elbow is an overuse injury. It’s caused by repeated contraction of the forearm muscles that you use to straighten and raise your hand and wrist. The repeated motions and stress to the tissue may result in inflammation or a series of tiny tears in the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the bone at the outside of your elbow.

Tennis Elbow Treatment
Tennis elbow is the common name for the inflammation of the tendons (also know as tendonitis ) attached to the lateral, or outside, of the elbow at the bony bump of the humerus.

( upper arm bone ). The medical term for this bony prominence is called the lateral epicondyle, which is the reason that the condition is also refered to as ‘lateral epicondylitis’. The muscles that move the wrist and fingers attach to a tendon that is connected to the bone structure in this area.
Tennis elbow patients suffer experience pain on the outer or top part of the elbow. This pain may be experienced farther up the forearm and occasionally even in the hand.

The pain is felt during grasping activities and may be accompanied by a feeling of weakness. Sufferers may have an dull ache in the area that is present at rest or at night after activity. Once the tendons become irritated and inflammed is it difficult for them to heal on their own because these tendons are constantly used every time the hand grips or squeezed anything.

Deep tissue massage is sometimes referred to as sports massage. In this form of massage, pressure is applied to deep down muscles – thus, the name deep tissue massage – as well as to connective tissue, fascia, tendons and muscles under the skin.

Compared to other types of massage, such as Swedish massage, deep tissue therapy is fairly vigorous. However, contrary to some beliefs, deep tissue massage can be very effective not only for athletes but for many types of people.

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage in which pressure is applied to the deep layers of muscles, tendons, connective tissue and fascia.

Generally, this is performed by a trained therapist using pressure from the fingertips.

Specifically the therapist uses the fingertips to apply deep pressure in a slow stroking technique. The therapist may also use forearm, elbow or other pressure on specific tissues.

The therapist may stroke the tissue following the grain of the muscle, tendon or fascia in a smoothing pattern, or may actually work against the grain of the fibers for specific therapeutic effect.

The purpose of deep tissue massage is to release tension.

Think of the muscle tissue as crumpled bits of fabric or paper. The work of the therapist is to help your body release the tension to smooth the bits of material.

These tissues are usually chronically contracted, very often from a pattern of stress or overuse.

There are many health conditions that deep tissue muscle massage can help you with.

Some potential conditions include:

* Help relieve back pain
* Reduce or eliminate neck pain
* Alleviate or ease tension
* Help relieve headaches
* General pain relief
* Reduce or eliminate trigger points
* Help heal a sports injury
* Help heal soft tissue damage
* Reduce symptoms of tennis elbow
* Reduce discomfort of golfers elbow

Deep tissue massage is very beneficial. For example, deep tissue massage can

* Help relieve pain
* Help relieve tension
* Soothe and relax muscles
* Help promote healing
* Teach and help the body to realign itself
* Help to eliminate scar tissue by breaking it up
* Help remove toxins
* Help increase oxygen flow
* Help improve blood circulation

The deep tissue massage method focuses on specific areas with the therapist using deep and slow massaging strokes.

In this way, the massage sinks below the surface layers and penetrates deeper into the structure of fibers.

The therapist will do this with compression and long slow strokes. The pressure is applied with the therapists’:

* Fingertips
* Forearms
* Elbows
* Knuckles
* Thumbs
* Fists
* Hands

The therapist will generally use lotion, oil or cream to help reduce friction in working into the deeper structures of the fibers.

Frequently, aromatic oils or lotions are used to enhance the bodies’ response to relax and self heal.

While this form of deep massage can be mildly uncomfortable at times, the therapist will warm the soft tissue before going into deeper fibers.

A well-trained therapist will also instruct you in proper breathing so your bodies’ natural healing response is brought into play.

Stretching and strengthening exercises, along with breathing techniques, can also be part of a successful, holistic therapeutic program of deep tissue massage therapy.

So if you have never tried deep tissue massage then perhaps since learning more you might be willing to give it a try!

Magnetic therapy has been in use for many thousands of years and it is still just as effective as it was when it was in use by ancient civilizations, such as the Ancient Greeks and Romans.

This form of therapy has become more popular in recent years due to people’s movement towards alternative medicine. This type of therapy is possibly more effective than it was previously since there have been many developments in the field since it was originally discovered.

One of the premium applications of magnetic therapy is magnetic jewelry, and also magnetic braces or supports used in athletic activities like Tennis or Golf. They perform magnetic therapy while you are wearing them.

This form of magnetic therapy can help you in various ways. Each different type of magnetic jewelry or brace will provide you with different benefits, but certain beneficial attributes are common to them all. The potency of the beneficial effects corresponds to the length of time that the magnetic jewelry or brace is worn. Therefore the longer you wear themm, the more beneficial effects you will receive.

The magnetic therapy as provided by the magnetic jewelry will act as a pain relief for two reasons. Firstly, the magnets can help to stimulate the release of endorphins which are the natural pain killers of the body, which also help to stimulate the bodies healing process. The other means by which magnetic therapy can help with pain relief is that it can help to increase the rate of circulation, which can in turn help to flush away the toxins that may be a major cause of pain.

The magnetic therapy can also increase the level of oxygen in the blood stream that gets distributed within the body. This can help to increase your energy levels since the oxygen will be distributed to muscles and tissues. The increased level of oxygen can also help to increase your mental clarity and awareness. You are encouraged to wear your magnetic jewelry while you are sleeping so that you can increase the likelihood of having a long, deep sleep and waking up refreshed in the morning.

Magnetic necklaces can help to relieve pain caused by migraines and headaches, neck, back and shoulder pain as well as potentially relieving the pain caused by muscle spasms and lock jaw. Magnetic bracelets can help to relieve pain associated with, tennis elbow and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, shoulder pain, tennis elbow, tendonitis and bursitis, as well as helping to relieve the pains caused by arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Magnetic anklets can be of help when it comes to lowering the levels of pain associated with lower back and knee pain, spurs and inflammation in the legs and feet as well as helping to alleviate numbness of the legs. This is addition to the increase of mobility that the areas around the pieces of jewelry will experience. Not only do these pieces of magnetic jewelry give you amazing health benefits, they also look stylishly elegant and the ranges of styles that are available are sufficient to cater for anyone’s requirements.

In my San Antonio, Texas based Massage Therapy and Bodywork practice I’m often asked by clients how it is that I assess clients and approach my work.

There are a number of methods I use but when it comes to musculoskeletal pain one set of guidelines are "The 7 Perpetuating Factors of Pain". These factors were originally presented to me during my training in Neuromuscular Therapy and Medical Massage and are based on the work of Drs. Janet Travell and David Simons (and others). By keeping these factors in mind during assessments and treatment a Massage Therapist’s potential to help the client increases tremendously. The factors are:

1) Ischemia
2) Trigger Points
3) Nerve Compression or Entrapment
4) Postural Distortion
5) Biomechanical Dysfunction
6) Stress
7) Nutrition

Each of these factors plays a part in a person’s musculoskeletal pain. Any one of these factors can be the sole cause of pain, but usually a person will have more than one factor at work – sometimes all of them.

ISCHEMIA is a local deficiency of blood supply and the oxygen transported by the blood. Ischemia can occur for a variety of reasons including direct injury to tissues, abnormally tight or overworked muscles, clothing or shoes that are too tight, or even off-the-shelf splints for tennis elbow. Specialized nerve receptors in muscles report pain in ischemic areas due to chemical changes that occur.

TRIGGER POINTS are hyperirritable spot in a muscle associated with a palpable "knot". Trigger Points are painful on compression and can refer pain and tenderness to other areas. Trigger Points are usually ischemic and often cause an entire muscle to be too tight, weak, and more easily fatigued. Trigger Points can be caused by overworking or overstressing muscles, direct trauma to muscles, or even chills.

NERVE COMPRESSIONS and ENTRAPMENTS are areas of abnormal pressure on nerves which can cause pain, numbness and tingling, or muscle weakness. A Nerve Compression occurs when a hard tissue such as a vertebrae or vertebral disc directly presses on a nerve. A more common occurance is a Nerve Entrapment. Nerve Entrapments occur when a soft tissue such as muscle, tendon, ligament, or fascia abnormally press on a nerve. An example of a nerve compression would be sciatica. Examples of a nerve entrapment include Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and the lesser known Piriformis Syndrome, but encompass a wide variety of painful conditions.

POSTURAL DISTORTIONS are another factor contributing to musculoskeletal pain. Distortions such as the head being to far forward, leg length discrepancies, or an elevated shoulder cause muscular imbalances and joint abnormalities which lead to pain.

BIOMECHANICAL DYSFUNCTIONS include joints that are either excessively mobile (hypermobile) or have an abnormally limited range of motion. These Biomechanical Dysfunctions cause pain in the joints themselves and contribute to some of the other perpetuating factors including postural distortion, ischemia, and trigger points.

STRESS may be the most common of all perpetuating factors of pain. A person experiencing physical, mental, emotional or spiritual stress produces larger amounts of stress hormones and usually has a nervous system that’s in overdrive – fight or flight syndrome. Stress leads to pain in so many ways that it’s impractical to list them here; however, stress can cause pretty much all of the other perpetuating factors.

NUTRITION is one area often overlooked in the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. Unfortunately, Massage Therapists are seldom trained, qualified, or legally able to provide nutritional advice. However, most Massage Therapists, including myself, do know healthcare professionals in their locale to help with the nutritional side of treating pain. These professionals often find that there are nutritional deficiencies just a Drs. Travell and Simons did during their research.

Treatment regimens that address all of the 7 Perpetuating Factors of Pain tend to be more successful and long lasting. Massage Therapists and Bodyworkers who can identify these factors in clients can assist the client in attaining pain relief with better posture, better joint movement, reduced stress, released trigger points and ischemia.

Not just anyone can become an acupuncture practitioner and open an acupuncture clinic. Professional training is available and a license is required for becoming an acupuncture practitioner. Many conditions with symptoms of acute pain like tennis elbow, cervical spondylitis, arthritis etc. can be treated successfully through acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a part of wealth of wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine. Many symptoms of acute pain can be successfully and easily treated using this therapy. The basic premise of acupuncture is that there is a channeled network of filters or gates throughout the body which are connected to the nervous system through the spinal chord. When an incision with a metallic needle is made at these points, the pinching can offset and cure the pain from an existing condition.

Modern allopathy assumes different causes for disease than acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on the idea that health problems are causes by imbalances in fundamental body energies of Chi. An acpuncture practitioner will not only try to remove symptoms, such as pain, but aims to go further and treat the underlying Chi energy balance represented by the opposing forces of Yin and Yan. For example, a Yin deficiency in the liver is said to cause a lack of moisture in tendons responsible for pain free movement. Therefore, not only would pain that hinders mobility be treated, but the liver Yin imbalance as well.

To relieve pain, "rounded" thin needles are used so as to pierce the skin to reach the specific points on muscles but avoid damage in the process. Multiple sessions are required and the identification of "maximal response" (substantial reduction of symptoms) varies from patient to patient, generally taking not more than four or five acupuncture sessions.

Even if a patient feels cured after attending acupuncture therapy only a few times, it is still important to continue the treatment for a minimum of one year. Acupuncture therapy is a natural and harmless treatment for tennis elbow. It also has no side effects. As an added bonus, some people who have undergone acupuncture feel more energized than before the treatments, in additional to being relieved of their pain.

Modern medicine does not have complete cures for several different kinds of illnesses. Acupuncture can be an easy and effective treatment for these complaints. Acupuncture is one of the alternative treatments for the common cold, and one of the natural remedies for the flu.

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

The basis of acupuncture is the understanding that health problems are caused by imbalances in Chi body energies. Imbalances are corrected by using thin needles at specific points on muscles. These needles offset the pain caused by the energy imbalance while avoiding damage to the muscle. Acupuncture has been shown to cure many illnesses that confound modern medicine.

Tennis elbow is a condition that affects sportsman and other individuals more often than tennis players. Tennis elbow is a long-lasting condition and hence the prognosis depends on early measures of rehabilitation comprising of rest and exercises.

Tennis elbow also known as ‘lateral epicondylitis’ is a stress injury with symptoms of pain and swelling at the lateral side of the elbow. Tenderness is elicited at the elbow laterally near the insertion of ‘extensor tendon’. It affects golfers, bowlers, racquet players, gardeners, carpenters, housekeepers, industrial workers and in those where the occupation demands repeated activities of hands and forearm.

Resting the forearm, applying icepacks and administering proper painkillers helps treat acute cases of tennis elbow with severe pain. This aids in quick healing of the micro tears in the tendons and muscles of the elbow. Physiotherapy and exercises contribute to strengthen and improve movements of the muscles of forearm.

Tennis Elbow Exercises
Tennis elbow exercises recover the flexibility and strength of muscles of forearm and wrists. These exercises also ensure proper blood circulation to the injured part and promote healing. The intensity of exercises should be increased gradually and avoid doing the ones that are painful. Exercises for lateral epicondylitis consists of stretching and strengthening exercises at the wrist, elbow and forearm.

Ball Squeezing Exercise
This exercise builds up the muscle power and durability to further withstand weight exercises. Hold a soft squeeze ball in your hand for a few seconds and release. Repeat the exercise 10-15 times twice a day.

Stretching Exercises for Tennis Elbow
Warming up of wrist joint and elbow joint is necessary before exercising the muscles. The normal range of movement at the wrist consists of palmar flexion, extension and lateral deviations. The range of motions at the elbow consists of flexion and then straightening of the elbow. These movements should be practiced 2-3 times in sets of 10.

Another stretching exercise is pronation and supination of the forearm. It is done by rotation of the palms downwards and upwards respectively without bending the wrist.

Strengthening Exercises for Tennis Elbow

Rest the forearm with wrist and palm facing downwards at the edge of a table. Hold a weight of around 400-500 g in the hand and bend the wrist downwards and then straighten it. Repeat the exercise for 2 minutes until the wrists are worked sufficiently.

Rest the forearm with wrist and palm facing upwards from the edge of the table. Hold the weight in the hand, flex the wrists and then lower it down.

Stand upright with the arms held out. Hold a stick in your hand and attach weights to it with a rope that reaches the ground. Roll the rope around the stick completely with the rotational movements at the wrist. Unroll the rope again so that it touches the ground.

The same exercise should be repeated with palm facing downwards and upwards. This helps in strengthening the wrist flexor pronators as well as extensors respectively.

Practice pronation and supination with appropriate weights or dumbbells. Another exercise is to place the wrist on a table with thumb facing upwards. Hold a hammer in hand and raise the wrist so that the thumb is pointing towards the ceiling. Straighten the wrist and repeat the exercise for 2 minutes. Same method can be followed while moving the wrist outwards towards the little finger.

In all the above weight exercises increase the weight gradually as the movements become easier without increasing the frequency of exercise. Initial weight can be 400 g and the duration around 120-160 seconds. The sets should be repeated after a resting period of 1-2 minutes.

These exercises help in improving the joint flexibility of wrist and elbow in all directions. Sports persons should consult a physiotherapist for overall strength training to avoid undue strain on body parts that are overused. Immediate treatment and physical therapy would prevent further episodes of tennis elbow. Recovery would depend upon age, general fitness level and the extent of injury.

Tennis elbow as such, does not always require direct surgical or drug intervention, not all cases of tennis elbow, warrant extensive physiotherapy, surgery or pain killers. If detected early, tennis elbow can be treated at home. Before you attempt any of the exercises and techniques mentioned below, please note that you should get the tennis elbow condition properly diagnosed, and should discuss the steps mentioned below with your doctor.

Make sure your hand and arm is properly rested, if during any activity you experience more pain than normal, stop the activity immediately and then rest your arm. Depending on the severity and duration of the pain, you might have to give up the activity for weeks or months on end. While the activity might be a part of your daily routine or might be something you do as a part of your job, be prepared for a life style change in that case.

Using an ice pack, or a just a anything at cool temperature (could be a bag of peas, a pack of salami). The minimum recommended duration for using an ice pack is around 10 minutes, and icing is recommended at least 3 times a day, if the pain is severe then you can increase both the duration and the frequency of the icing. Usually your physiotherapist or surgeon will recommend this activity, and if so follow the instructions to the letter.

A ‘counterforce’ brace or elbow brace is a specialized orthopaedic brace, that is designed to provide additional support to your elbow, and to keep it warmer thereby increasing the blood circulation to the elbow. You might have noticed a lot of sports men wear this brace as it not only re-directs the strain that is experienced by the muscles but also makes sure that the elbow muscles and tendons have better support.

If you experience inflammation and soreness in your elbow, then elevating the elbow at an angle will usually help draw the blood supply away from the elbow, and thus reduce the pain you feel. It also greatly reduces the swelling and numbness that is associated with tennis elbow.

Get started as soon as possible with an exercise strengthening program that specifically targets the muscles and tendons surrounding the elbow joint. As with any injury, rehab is vital for a complete recovery. Specific tennis elbow exercises will get you back on track in no time. If you are looking to cure your tennis elbow for good, check out this fantastic tennis elbow system.

The room was quiet and John lay on his side watching television. As he got up and began tidying the bed to go to sleep he felt an excruciating pain in his elbow. Taken by surprise, he sat down on the bed and touched the area and found that it was swollen. He sat in the same place for several minutes trying to recall where he could have hurt his elbow. Not able to recall a thing, he went into the kitchen and rubbed some ice over the spot, hoping that the pain and swelling would subside!

What the factors that cause elbow pain?

There are many factors that can cause pain in the elbow, with one of them being tendinitis, which is an injury and inflammation that is caused to the tendons. Most of the people who are at risk of developing elbow pain are those who play racquet sports. The term given to the injury caused because of the above is termed tennis elbow. Of course gardening, using a screwdriver, playing baseball and overusing your wrist may also be the cause of elbow tendinitis.

Apart from the causes mentioned above, a few other factors that contribute to the pain in the elbow are:

Strain in the elbow

Any type infection that occurs in the elbow

Arthritis – This term refers to the narrowing of the joint space as also the loss of the cartilage in the elbow.

Bursitis – In this case, there is an inflammation of a fluid-filled cushion that is located underneath the skin.

Yes, you can reduce the pain in the elbow at home. Here are some steps to help you reduce the pain.

Once that is done, wrap the elbow with a bandage. You can also use an air splint to prevent using the elbow.

If possible, keep your elbow elevated above you heart and give the elbow rest for at least 2 days. It is advisable that you do not return to the activity that resulted in the problem for about 3 weeks.

Once you find that the pain and swelling has subsided, gradually strengthen the muscles with the help of a physical therapist.

When is it advisable to contact a medical professional?

It is advisable to meet a medical professional if:
